My career has been built around the targets I have set for myself. I have managed to achieve them sometimes and have had to face failures too?sometimes by just a wee little bit. Maybe that has kept the fire burning in me and helped me move from one echelon to another.

I have written this article to guide you on how to set goals for yourself. Personally I am impressed by Leslie Cameron?s methodology and would recommend it to all. To start with, set a goal that is ?achievable? rather than setting an unachievable goal for you. Research and see if anyone prior to you has been able to achieve the same goal. If no, what is the basis on which you feel you shall be able to do it? The answers to these questions would give you clarity on whether your targets are reasonable or not.

IS ACHIEVING THIS GOAL WITHIN MY CONTROL? Booking golf instruction lessons with your coach to improve technique, is within your control, so is the effort you put into practice. ARE THE COSTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF REACHING THE GOAL ACCEPTABLE TO ME? Sometimes stepping up a level in golf may mean time away from family or friends, or may break up your regular Saturday playing group. Is that acceptable to you?

Analyze your golf technique and corrections needed. Is your coach competent enough to help rectify them? Is your body healthy enough to endure the physical needs of golf?

Finally, ask yourself, IF I COULD HAVE THE GOAL NOW, or at the appropriate time, WOULD I TAKE IT? Hopefully, you will answer yes to this last question. If not, complete the process again until you find a goal that fits. Learn to set rolling goals. By that I mean, always be aware that there is a future beyond the next goal. You may like to try the process for yourself using any golf goal that is relevant to you:

1) What do I want to achieve, what is my goal?

2) Is it achievable?

3. How would I know that my goal has been fulfilled?

4. Do I have it in me to fulfill the target?

5. Am I mentally prepared to bear the costs and compromises for achieving the goal?

6. Are the resources to achieve the target under my control?

7. If I achieve my goal after a certain time would it be acceptable to me?

And remember to set rolling goals and you will improve but leaps and bounds.

For new golfers of any age, the golf clubs and other equipment will be one of the first things to purchase. There is no need to run out and buy the latest and greatest driver to start with, but as you continue to improve your game, you can slowly improve your golf gear, too.

To start with, however, you simply need the most basic set of golf clubs including: drivers, wedges, putters and irons. Make sure that you know which club is which, and what they are intended to be used for. Also, do not get caught up in buying all of the gadgets and accessories; there will be plenty of time for that later.

In addition to golf clubs, you will need good shoes, with or without cleats. Check with the course that you will be playing the majority of the time to find out what kind of shoes are and are not allowed. (While you are at it, you might want to check out their dress code as well.) Other important initial golf purchases to consider include books or videos to help you learn not only the mechanics of the game but the rules as well.

For the younger child, price should be a consideration for a number of reasons. For one thing, a child’s hobbies change fast and often, and you do not want to get stuck with a ton of golf equipment when the hockey phase sets in. Also, children are still growing, and the clubs may be too short for proper use in a few months, again, leaving you with useless gear. And finally, unless the child is exceptional, they just do not take the very best care of their belongings. A used set should be perfectly adequate for a child to learn on- but make sure that they are properly sized for them. Too short and the stance will be all off, possibly leading to poor posture; too long and they will not have be able to have a graceful, powerful swing.

For the adult, the growth factor is not such an issue, and most adults know how to take care of their things with relative responsibility, but are you really going to be sticking with golf for a long period of time? Consider renting or borrowing clubs while you honestly gauge your actual interest in the sport- will you be playing often or will it be a once in a while kind of thing? Can you afford to pay top dollar for something that will have to be dusted off between each use?

Check with the local golf pro shop and get a general idea of what kind of clubs are right for your body type, stance and your swing. Crunch the numbers and decide what you can afford and what is out of your reach right now. Start with the basics and then upgrade as you go.

Choosing The Right Putter

Having the right set of clubs is vital to a good game of golf. You will need the right size, type and weight for you and your game. When researching different types of clubs, you’ll want to spend the most time considering your putter. When playing golf, you’ll end up spending almost have your time putting, making it a highly important club in your set. The difference between the right putter and the wrong putter is the difference between a great game, and a game full of frustration. Check out a few things to consider before you buy your new putter.

Length: The length is the first thing you need to consider when buying your putter. Most putters come in a range of 33 – 36 inches. When testing out what size is right for you, it important to rest the clubhead on the ground to get a feel for it. If the length is too short you will have to stand too close to the ball and the heel of the putter might come off the ground. If the length is too long, you will end up standing too far away from the ball and the toe of the putter will come up. The length is incredibly important – the putter should fit you and your stance and you should not have to adjust yourself to your putter.

Head: The head of the putter comes in a variety of different designs. One common design is the blade cutter. This is the oldest and most universal shape for putters. The advantage of this design is that it creates a soft hit which is perfect for just about any type of green you play on, making it a great shape for beginners. Another type of head design is a heel-toe weighted putter, also known as a peripheral weighted putter. This design is good for golfers who have an in and out stroke as it has more of a head on the putter. Finally, you might want to consider a mallet putter which has a much deeper and lower center of gravity — ideal for reducing backspin.

Faces: The type of face and insert you have on your putter really depends on the speed of greens you are playing on. The first type of face is the metal face constructed of steel or other types of metals such as brass, zinc and aluminum. These faces have a reputation for giving the putter a solid, controlled feel with the soft feedback. Another type is the insert faced putters, which are constructed from metal but the face is replaced with a light weight, non metal material. The advantage here is putter with more forgiveness and a smoother roll. Finally, a recent development is the groove faced putters. These faces help achieve a forward motion to keep the ball absolutely straight.

The grip of your putter is another consideration to take into account. While it may not seem like a big deal, it can actually advance or hinder your game depending on whether you have the right one for you. You will see that the majority of putter grips are flat on top. This actually helps you with your swing by making it easier to find the placement of your thumbs. For people who have a stroke that involves a bit of wrist action, a skinnier grip might be ideal on the putter. However, most professionals prefer thicker grips that help take your hands out of the stroke.

Getting The Most From Golf Lessons

It is never easy asking for help, but in golf, it is practically a must-do. More’s the pity, we often ask our friends and partners, whereas in fact, we should be taking a lesson or two with a professional, usually called the Club Pro.

We may think that a Pro would criticize too harshly, but they are honest, positive and usually very helpful.

Golf lessons at the local golf course aren’t as expensive as you probably think and they are worth it too, because your game will get better more rapidly and cause you less frustration, making the game much more fun for you.

It is of vital importance to be absolutely honest about your game. The Pro will ask you what you think you need to learn: driving, chipping, putting or whatever you think you need assistance with.

Listen to the Pro golfer carefully and follow the Pro’s instructions. You may have doubts if the Pro alters your stance, your grip or your swing, but really, the Pro does know what’s best.

Oh and don’t hesitate to ask the Pro golfer any questions you may have and don’t worry about whether your question or concern may sound stupid – they’ve heard it all before and will not make you feel like an idiot for inquiring. If you don’t understand, tell the Pro that you do not get it. You should never walk away from a lesson with unanswered questions.

For instance, a strategy might be to start with one thing during a lesson, or on several things. You might begin with a lesson on driving; get the grip, the stance, the swing and the follow-through right in one lesson and then practice it ‘for real’ for a few weeks until you feel that you’ve got it more or less right. Next time, you might decide you need help with your short game, or the putting.

You’ve invested in the golfing equipment and it isn’t cheap, so it doesn’t make sense not to learn how to use it to it’s best advantage and improve your abilities, does it?

Golf is a really popular sport at the moment. People of all ages can enjoy it, and it is something you can enjoy without having to exhaust yourself out and get all sweaty, perfect for a relaxing summers evening, or a quick few holes at lunch. If you want to beat your friends though then you are going to need some lessons to help develop your skills. What most people don’t realize though is that your clubs can have a big effect on how you play too, if you have the wrong sort of clubs it can be a disaster.

A golf club has an optimum place on it to strike the ball with, aptly known as the ’sweet spot’. If you hit the ball with the sweet spot then you can expect your ball to go straight and get some great distance, if you hit it outside of that area then your ball could end up in the rough, the trees, or even in the car park! Due to their design then you will find that different sets of clubs have different sized sweet spots.

The most extreme example of this is the blade design that the pros use. These have almost no forgiveness in them because they have a really small sweet spot. Yet a pro player has the skill to hit it straight when they need to, but the smaller sweet spot also gives them the ability to shape their shot a lot more than other designs.

The design that most people will recognize is the cavity back design, that is what most players will use. This cavity back design has a much larger sweet spot than the blade design to help the rest of us who don’t always hit the ball in the dead center of the club face. The larger sweet spot is created by increasing the MOI (moment of inertia) of the club head, by adding weight to the edges of the back of the head. This stiffens it up and stops it from twisting when you hit the ball, thus giving you a larger sweet spot.

The only drawback to that design is that you cannot shape the shot like a pro would when you need to. But if you are like me then you have to put all your skill into just making the ball go straight and not end up in a bunker, so the last thing on my mind is trying to curve the flight of the ball on purpose!

Hybrid clubs are at the other extreme to the blades, these are for players who need more help to hit the ball straight, and these are literally a hybrid between a wood and an iron. Typically they were just used in place of low numbered irons or high woods, but now hybrid iron sets have started to come onto the market. The extra size and weight of the club heads on these gives them an even bigger sweet spot so that even the most inexperienced player should be able to play some good shots!
